Home remodel design review

Embarking on a home design or remodeling project is an exciting venture, but it comes with a multitude of decisions, challenges, and complexities. That’s where the expertise of a design professional becomes invaluable.

The reasons why engaging the expertise of a design professional transcends mere luxury but is an investment for any homeowner. From time and cost efficiency to the creation of personalized, harmonious spaces, designers transform your dreams into reality.

In this blog post, we delve into the top five reasons why hiring a design pro is not just a luxury but a smart investment.

Time Savings:

Designing a space involves numerous decisions, from choosing materials to selecting contractors. It entails countless intricacies that remain hidden from view, demanding a substantial time investment. A designer can save homeowners time by handling these tasks for them.

Thanks to the designers’ access to a wide network of suppliers and resources, their experience allows them to make informed decisions quickly and efficiently. This eliminates homeowners making costly and time-consuming mistakes by guiding them through the selection process and preventing design flaws that could lead to drawn-out revisions later.

Money Savings:

Designers work closely with homeowners to establish a realistic budget and help prioritize where to allocate funds. They have extensive knowledge of product pricing and can recommend cost-effective alternatives without compromising quality or style. By hiring a designer, homeowners can make informed decisions about where to invest and where to save on the project.

Professional Results:

Designers have a wealth of knowledge in their field, their experience allows them to create functional and aesthetically pleasing designs that suit the homeowners’ specific needs and preferences. Designers also have a keen eye for details and consider every aspect of the design, from the flow of the space to the selection of cabinets, finishes and countertops. They pay attention to the smallest details, ensuring that every element works harmoniously together, creating cohesive and visually appealing kitchens.

Personalized Service:

A designer works closely with the homeowner to understand their vision, style, and requirements. They will then translate that information into a customized design plan that reflects the homeowner’s personality and enhances the overall look of the space. Designers can create cohesive and well-coordinated interiors, incorporating the homeowner’s desired elements and ensuring a unique and personalized result.

Peace of Mind:

Whether it is a small upgrade or a full remodel, designing and executing a project involves coordination with various professionals like general contractors and skilled trades. A designer takes on the role of project manager, overseeing all aspects of the project to ensure everything runs smoothly. They communicate with the necessary parties, resolve any issues that may arise and keep the project on track. Hiring a designer takes the stress from the project and allows homeowners to enjoy a pleasant experience.

The decision to enlist a design professional isn’t just an indulgence, it’s a strategic investment that reaps countless rewards. From time and money savings to the creation of bespoke, functional spaces tailored to your preferences, the expertise of a design pro streamlines the entire process. With a designer at the helm, you gain not just a beautifully crafted space but also peace of mind, knowing that every detail is meticulously attended to and that your vision is brought to life seamlessly. Embrace the journey of home transformation with confidence, guided by the skillful hands of a design professional.

2023 awards season has come to an end and we couldn’t be more thrilled at the outcome. It’s truly an honor to be recognized for our dedication and hard work in the remodeling industry. These awards are not just a testament to our skills and craftsmanship, but also to our commitment to engagement, trade partner satisfaction, community service, and, most importantly, customer satisfaction. Here is a round up of the awards our team was honored with this year.

Remodeler of the Year award winner from Housing first MN

Remodeler of the Year – Housing First MN

Each year, one builder, one remodeler, and one associate member of Housing First Minnesota earn these prestigious awards, which recognize engagement, trade partner satisfaction, and community service. Builder and Remodeler of the Year also include customer satisfaction. Past “of-the-year” winners evaluate online surveys submitted by Housing First Minnesota members that work with the nominees as well as customer testimonials to select this year’s top three honors.

This prestigious award recognizes our unwavering commitment to excellence in our craft and dedication to our community. We are honored to be selected for this exceptional accolade, alongside some of the best in the industry. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our amazing team, who always strive for excellence.

Best Overall & 1st Place, Primary Bath – NKBA

Designer Mary Maney’s Serene Luxury was awarded two awards by the NKBA national organization at the Kitchen & Bath Design + Industry Awards.

The primary bathroom was outdated and needed a facelift. The homeowner’s wanted to elevate all the finishes and fixtures to create a luxurious feeling space. From the expanded vanity with wall sconces on each side of the gracefully curved mirrors to the plumbing fixtures that are minimalistic in style with their fluid lines and a sculptural free-standing tub with soft curves and elegant proportions, this bathroom is one you want to spend time in.

1st Place, Medium Bath – NKBA MN

Designer Jennie Hjerpe’s Modern Opulence Primary Bathroom was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

By removing the old tub and extending the shower enclosure into the bathroom we were able to give these homeowners a spacious walk-in shower. The vanity was extended by removing the linen closet in the corner. Now the sinks are separated by a countertop cabinet for storage.

1st Place, Powder Room – NKBA MN

Designer Mary Maney’s Bold Half Bath was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

This bathroom went from boring builder-grade to eye-catching and memorable. The bold paint color adds drama to the room and the metallic wallpaper really make this bathroom pop! A mixture of metal finishes and the crisp white vanity add a clean look to the Half Bathroom. Hickory wood flooring was added and runs throughout the main floor of the home.

2nd Place, Small Kitchen – NKBA MN

Designer Amber Weekly’s Artistic Kitchen remodel was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

This downtown St. Paul condo had been updated recently but the quality and layout were not great. The homeowner desired an open kitchen with a good layout, plenty of storage, ample countertops, and seating for entertaining.

To achieve these goals, we got rid of the kitchen island and open shelving unit to reconfigured the kitchen into a U-shaped layout with a huge peninsula. Open shelves were added for display, and a bold green paint was used on the accent wall where a commissioned painting will hang.

Ample Cambria Quartz countertops in the Skara Brae pattern bring an organic feel to the space while the long linear porcelain tile backsplash adds to the industrial, modern vibe of the open loft.

2nd Place, Large Bath – NKBA MN

Designer Jennie Hjerpe’s Simply Beautiful Bathroom remodel was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

This spacious bathroom was dated and had a cold cave like shower. The homeowner desired a beautiful space with a European feel, like the ones she discovered on her travels to Europe. She also wanted a privacy door separating the bathroom from her bedroom.

The designer opened up the closed off shower and now the entire room is bright and airy with marble-look porcelain tile throughout. The archway was added to frame in the under-mount tub. The double vanity in a soft gray paint and topped with Corian Quartz compliments the marble tile. The new chandelier along with the chrome fixtures add just the right amount of luxury to the room. Now when you come in from the bedroom you are enticed to come in and stay a while in this beautiful space

2nd Place, Small Bath – NKBA MN

Designer Amber Weekly’s Artistic Bathroom was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

The bathroom had good bones but was lacking light, had a weird industrial metal insert in the wall, and had a one-piece stainless-steel shower insert that was dangerously slippery.

In the bathroom, we replaced the mirror with a unique hexagon shape that echoes the gradient hexagon encaustic tile in the shower. A new penny round shower floor was installed for extra traction and frameless glass shower door was added to keep the bathroom bright and open. An accent of stainless-steel corner shelves in the shower add function without distracting from the great pattern. Giving new life to the existing distressed vanity cabinet, the new Cambria Quartz countertop matches the countertops in the newly renovated kitchen.

3rd Place, Medium Kitchen – NKBA MN

Designer Jennie Hjerpe’s Captivating Vibrance kitchen remodel was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

The kitchen lacked light and had a peninsula that cut off the kitchen from the rest of the house. By redesigning the space to have a large island with dining seating, the kitchen now flows into the living room. The window was moved to allow space for a stately hood and the sink was moved to the island where there is ample storage and seating for six. The pantry closet was opened up to the ceiling and now includes cabinet bases for storage and a wine refrigerator.

The white cabinets and backsplash tiles reflect the light streaming in from the window and sliding door brightening this once dark room. The cheerful blue cabinet bases ground the room and tie in the tone of the flooring. Floating shelves have been thoughtfully placed in the room to bring the floor color up.

3rd Place, Large Bath – NKBA MN

Designer Mary Maney’s Fresh Escape bathroom remodel was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

A new room layout created a more functional space. The entry door was replaced with a pocket door to keep the area in front of the vanity unobstructed. By adding a double sink vanity, we gained valuable floor space to still have a soaking tub and larger shower.

Rich, walnut cabinetry is accented nicely with the soft, blue/green color palette of the tiles and wall color. New window shades that can be lifted from the bottom or top are ideal if they want full light or an unobstructed view, while maintaining privacy. Handcrafted swirl pendants illuminate the vanity and are made from 100% recycled glass.

3rd Place, Other Rooms – NKBA MN

Designer Mary Maney’s Bold Laundry Room remodel was recognized at the NKBA MN Design Gala.

By removing a shallow depth pantry closet in the Kitchen, we gained square footage in the Laundry Room to add a bench for setting backpacks on and cabinetry above for storage of outerwear. Coat hooks make hanging jackets and coats up easy for the kids. Luxury vinyl flooring that looks like tile was installed for its durability and comfort to stand on.

On the opposite wall, a countertop was installed over the washer and dryer for folding clothes, but it also comes in handy when the family is entertaining, since it’s adjacent to the Kitchen. A tall cabinet and floating shelf above the washer and dryer add additional storage and completes the look of the room. A pocket door replaces a swinging door that hindered traffic flow through this room to the garage, which is their primary entry into the home.

These awards mean the world to us, and it’s a true reflection of our commitment to delivering outstanding remodeling services and giving back to our community. We’re excited to continue our journey of excellence and innovation in the remodeling industry!

At Crystal Kitchen, we take immense pride in our ability to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones, and our Fall 2023 Remodelers Showcase home is no exception. This project epitomizes elegance, sophistication, and timelessness, creating a space that is as functional as it is beautiful. We hope to see you at the open house and tour this year so you can see this breathtaking space for yourself!

Twin Cities kitchen remodel with white cabinets, wood floor, and natural light

Every renovation project begins with a challenge, and this kitchen was no exception. Our clients came to us with a clear vision of an all-white kitchen that would be both a culinary haven and a work of art. The space was poorly laid out and not very functional with limited storage and an awkward flow from the original 1956 kitchen and added on dining room.

Our talented design team set to work, focusing on creating a space that would seamlessly blend aesthetics with functionality.

The transformation was nothing short of magical. The once-dull kitchen now exuded a sense of serenity and sophistication. The all-white palette made the space feel larger and brighter, creating an inviting atmosphere for both cooking and entertaining.

Functionality was not compromised during the remodel. The kitchen was designed to maximize storage, with cleverly concealed cabinets and drawers.

 • Cabinetry: We selected custom-made white shaker-style cabinets that not only provided ample storage but also added an element of classic charm to the kitchen.

 • Countertops: To complement the white cabinets, we opted for stunning white, highly durable Cambria countertops.

 • Appliances: High-end appliances make cooking in this kitchen a delight while not contrasting with the traditional style of the space.

Crystal Kitchen + Bath has been in business for over 49 years with our focus on remodeling. Although we specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodeling, we also design other rooms in the home such as, laundry, mudrooms, home offices, lower levels and family rooms.

Our process has been perfected over those years to ensure that our designers and project team are helping your dreams become reality.

Phase 1:

Showroom Visit
The first step in the home remodeling process is to visit our showroom (or schedule a virtual meeting) and meet with your designer. During this time we will discuss your project wish list and go over your budget details. It is helpful to bring your measurements and blueprints if available, and of course inspiration for your project.

Phase 2:

Design Retainer
The next phase is when we will visit your home to collect measurements and conduct a field study. During this time we will review the preliminary plans and your designer will prepare conceptual drawings. This is also the first opportunity to discuss products and finishes.
January 01, 2021

Phase 3:

Project Development
The third step is when a Project Manager visits you home to develop scope of work and finalize estimates to complete the renovation. This is also when the designer will finalize construction drawings and product selections to get to the final cost.
January 01, 2021

Phase 4:

Final Agreement
Once the final estimate and scope of work is agreed upon, you will then sign the contract with a down payment. This is when we will prepare the project schedule, order all materials, and obtain required permits for the work.
January 01, 2021
12 AM

Phase 5:

Construction
Next the construction is performed by licensed, bonded, and insured contractors. Your project manager and design will available for frequent communication and updates. They will be coordinating schedules, on-site supervision, technical review of the progress, and submitting change orders when necessary to ensure your home remodel is perfect.
January 01, 2021
12 AM

Phase 6:

Post-Construction
The final phase consists of the final inspection to ensure no punch-list updates are left unfinished and your dream home is perfect. This is when we will review documentation such as lien waivers, product care and maintenance literature, and our customer satisfaction survey. And of course, our promise to you is in the follow through – we are here for you even after your project wraps!

Artistic kitchen after remodel with wooden cabinets

Gone are the days of gray on every surface in sight. After being cooped up in our homes for the last 3 years, we are ready for some color and personality! Bold hues and patterns are all the rage in fashion and interior design.

We are designing a lot more color into our client’s spaces. Blue and green cabinets are a common request. Bold paint colors on walls are being used to bring life and playfulness to the rooms. Color has such a strong tie to emotion, pick shades that speak to you.

Craftsman kitchen remodel with butcher block island, built in dining seating, and double glass sliding doors

Looking forward at the colors of the year for 2023 we see Pantone’s Digital Lavender, a happy light purple. Benjamin Moore’s unapologetically bold Raspberry Blush, Valspar’s pick, a moody blue green called Everglade Deck. In the recent past we have seen neutral colors of the year like Simply White and Urban Bronze. In 2023 you can expect to see more bold colors used in interior design and fashion.

Kitchen remodel with blue base cabinets, white tall cabinets, floating wood shelf, and white subway tiles

Bold patterns are also finding their way into our homes. Large palm and foliage prints, geometric tile and bold graphic prints are all over Instagram. Even here in the more reserved Midwest we have homeowners choosing ombre patterned tile for shower walls, and geometric mosaics, and hexagonal tiles for their floors and backsplashes. Even patterned wallpaper is making a strong comeback.

Kitchen remodel with statement backsplash

What does all this mean for you? It means don’t be afraid to paint those cabinets something other than white or gray, get the funky wallpaper, choose colors and patterns that make you happy and feel energized. If you love neutrals or classic white on white, consider adding some color with your accessories. Whatever you do, create a space that reflects your personality and don’t be afraid to be bold!

Kitchen with wood tones and white kitchen with stainless steel refrigerator

Today’s homeowner is more apt to make conscious decisions about their homes. We all want to have the best possible green design for different reasons. Whether it be to be kinder to Mother Earth or to prevent problems with allergies. Here are a few ways to make your home a sustainable home. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.

Cabinet boxes: Today’s cabinets are made either of plywood or particle board and have become a major sustainable design trend concern. There is a lot of speculation as to which product is more superior. Many like the use of plywood because it has inherent strength in its laminated layers and has superior screw ability. Cabinet manufacturers like to use particle board because it has a more uniform thickness, which allows for higher tolerances when cutting. Installers like plywood because it isn’t as heavy to install. Both material types meet the CARB2 compliance. This 2010 California based law limits the formaldehyde emissions from plywood and particle board.

Kitchen remodel with high-quality, custom cabinets

Cabinet doors and finish: In addition to CARB2 compliant cabinet boxes, the aesthetic everyone sees are the doors. Woods like bamboo and engineered veneers (EV) are perfect for slab door selections. EV comes in as bamboo, oak, walnut, and cherry and many exotic wood species. Bamboo specifically is a sustainable material that requires a lot less energy to nurture and regenerates from the remains of harvested trees. The alternative to wood doors, MDF (medium density fiberboard) doors typically have less problems with shrinkage and swelling of the material. MDF is great for painted doors for these very reasons.

To take it a step further, green-core can be specified for the cabinet doors. Green-core is a completely recycled material used for slab doors. Wood for the doors is typically sourced from forests in the United States. Crystal Cabinet Works also partakes with Forests for All, Forever through the Forest Stewardship Council and has been a part of the program since 2009. In addition to the CARB2 compliant cabinet boxes, Crystal Cabinets are made locally in Princeton, MN. Less truck pollution on the highways! Reducing delivery distances has a positive impact on the project’s carbon footprint.

Often people are also concerned about the chemical fumes from paint and stain. These smells come from the harmful chemicals – or volatile organic compound – in VOC paints. They are environmentally harmful not only to the environment but also to your health. Crystal Cabinet Works employs only the use of low or no VOC paint and stain for the cabinets.

Remodeled kitchen with bookshelf for added storage at the end of the appliance wall

Appliances: Another way to improve your sustainable kitchen is by using an energy-efficient appliances. Switching to eco-friendly Energy Star labeled appliances are now easier than ever thanks to the variety of options available today. For example, refrigeration technology is constantly changing methods in keeping your food fresher longer. A new refrigerator typically uses 40% less energy than a model sold in 2001. You can tell how efficient a product is through its energy rating.

A good dishwasher can save on the amount of water used compared to handwashing. Today’s dishwashers use an average of 4-5 gallons of water per load. Hand washing uses between 5 and 15 gallons of water depending on your washing style. Dishwashers are perfect even if you never fill it all the way!

In terms of cooking appliances, using an induction cooktop or range is more energy-efficient than either gas or electric stoves because of its use of electromagnetism. Electromagnetism is a kind of radiation including visible light, radio waves, gamma rays, and X-rays, in which electric and magnetic fields vary simultaneously. An induction range heats water at a much faster rate than traditional gas or electric. Induction is also deemed as one of the safest ways to cook. The surface is only hot when a magnetic pot or pan is on it. You’ll save time, energy, and money by using induction. When trying to go green, you’ll want to invest in energy-efficient appliances.

Garbage Disposals: A garbage disposal is another great feature of a sustainable kitchen. This will be installed in your kitchen sink, reducing food waste that goes in your garbage bins and ultimately to a landfill. Instead, food waste goes through your garbage disposal unit and directly down the sewage system. It’s then treated in sewage treatment plants and used to benefit the environment. Some of these plants will capture any methane gas that is released by food waste more efficiently than a landfill and can convert it to a green energy source. Along with the garbage disposal, having a location in the kitchen for recycling plastics, paper, and metals is a convenient way to gather nonfood waste for weekly pick up.

Bold kitchen renovation with black base cabinets, white upper cabinets, wood floor, and large island

Lighting: LED lights are highly efficient and environmentally friendly light sources for your kitchen. They are 90% more efficient than either incandescent, fluorescent, or compact fluorescent lamps. LED lights also typically have a longer lifespan than any of the other light sources. Using less energy reduces the demand from power plants and decreases greenhouse gas emissions. They also offer a higher quality of light distribution meaning fewer lights are needed to achieve the same level of brightness as traditional lighting. You not only save on electricity but also on non-biodegradable wastes. As an added bonus, LED light bulbs are recyclable… another plus!

Don’t rush the design. A sustainable kitchen is a worthwhile project to undertake and therefore needs careful, thoughtful planning and design. You don’t want to regret your choices a few months, or even years, down the line and need to replace items. Good design will save you money on future repair and replacement of cheap, low-quality materials. More importantly, an environment-friendly, sustainable kitchen design promises you more durable and long-lasting materials. It’s better to make a good investment once that will last a long time.

Smart Technology in Your Home https://crystalkitchen.com/smart-tech/ https://crystalkitchen.com/smart-tech/#respond Sun, 30 Jul 2023 01:30:10 +0000 https://crystalkitchen.com/?p=7106 The post Smart Technology in Your Home appeared first on Crystal Kitchen + Bath.

]]>

We see smart technology popping up in most home devices and appliances today. These products
connect to the internet and provide control in new ways. Here are some Smart Technology options for the kitchen and bathroom you may not know about yet, here to help make our daily lives more convenient and enjoyable.

The Weatherproof TV originally designed for outdoor use is perfect for a bathroom application. These TV’s are designed to withstand moisture and wetness so you can watch a show or enjoy music while getting ready or enjoying a soak in the tub.

Do you desire a TV in your bathroom but would prefer it to be hidden? The vanity TV mirror is a great option. The advantage here is when not in use it disappears and all you see is the mirror. There are many features available between brands like touch screen, weather forecast, health data, voice activation, LED lights and more.

In the Kitchen, the heart of the home, convenience is a must. Voice control can provide hands-free control of the tv, music, lighting, shades, security systems, temperature and more. Moving from the speaker-looking smart device, a Smart Display has become a great option. Not only providing voice activation but also a touchscreen display with apps, music, tv, recipes, digital photo frame, a true control center for the kitchen. Some models sit on the counter, or hang on the wall, or can be integrated in a mirrored backsplash, or included in a major appliance like refrigerator or range hood.

Smart Kitchen faucets have become smarter. We have seen the touchless feature before, but now there is voice activation allowing on/off, amount of water dispensed and specific water temperature. No more looking for the tablespoon measurer, the faucet will dispense the perfect amount.

Many of us love to have music flooding our homes and flush ceiling speakers have been around for a long time but what about the bathroom. Weatherproof speakers are now available for the bathroom and can even be used in showers too. So go ahead and sing in the shower.

No more waiting for the shower to warm up. Use your phone with the U shower system to control your tub or shower. It will remotely start and preheat the water sending you a notification when the water is up to temp, or use the 12 programmable settings.

Including Smart Technology in your Kitchen and Bathroom remodel can elevate the way you use these rooms and provide convenience, security and enjoyment.

Kitchen remodel with mixed metal accents and patterned backsplash

It is no secret that home renovations can quickly add up. With appliances, building materials, finish selections, and labor, costs can vary depending on what you pick to go in your space.

Our designers are experts in achieving the look you want and are breaking down the places they recommend splurging and where to save during your home remodel.

Quality Cabinetry

Invest in quality cabinetry. Cabinets are the most impactful element of the kitchen and beautiful cabinets can elevate your entire kitchen remodel. They take up the most visual room in the space, so don’t cut corners here. Good quality cabinetry has 6-way adjustable hinges and prevent doors from rubbing and scraping off the finish, plus they last longer. Custom cabinet lines allow you to design pieces that look like a piece of furniture or built-in cabinetry, which adds character & charm to the room.

Kitchen remodel with high-quality, custom cabinets

Countertops

Aside from cabinetry, the next most important element of your kitchen remodel is the countertops. Invest in them! You want to make sure that you select a countertop that will last many generations, and something that is classic and timeless.

Kitchen remodel with waterfall countertop on the large island

Backsplash

A unique tiled backsplash can really make a statement in the kitchen. Seek out local artisan tile companies to see what they have to offer. The backsplash can become the focal point of the room, while supporting local artists and their craft.

Unique Ventilation Hood

Ventilation hoods can be a focal point in the kitchen and elevate the look of the space. Combining two different finishes or adding unique architectural element, such as corbels, make the piece unique.

We moved every appliance to the outside wall making the working side very efficient. A large island provides ample counter space and divides the working side of the kitchen from the natural pathway to the dining area. This new layout makes for a perfect traffic flow when entertaining, gives them smart storage, seating for 8 and a design that matched their fun and artistic personalities.

Removing the dining room wall made room for built in banquette seating a substantial 10-1/2-foot island that houses a wine fridge, trash and recycle pull out, drawer microwave, deep drawers and roll out shelves. A 13” deep pantry makes it easy to find everything and a floating shelf in an accent wood provides a bit of display space and coordinates with their new stained table.

The main floor powder room bumps into the kitchen about 15”. This gave us an opportunity to and an accent wall of white brick tile that provides a light and airy textural element to the room. Hard waring luxury vinyl flooring stands up well to their 2 small children and the nails of their shar pei dog.

Due to the location of a sunporch, we had to strategically plan the placement of the range and hood so that we could route the new venting outside.

White and Blue Crystal cabinetry accented with brushed gold hardware keep the room feeling bright, clean and adds a fun pop of color. The Cambria Portrush quartz countertops feature blue veins and gold flecks that tie the color story together.

Now this on trend kitchen functions perfectly for this busy family and is ideal for large holiday gatherings.

Modern fireplace remodel with minimalist design elements

Minimalist style is all about less is more, highlighting uncomplicated forms, clean lines, and simple finishes. Inspired by Japanese design, minimalism echoes a contemporary feel with plenty of open space, and a good reason for that. The average household has 300,000 items or more, which leads to the average person spending twelve days per year looking for things they can’t find.

The art of minimalism extends beyond home design and into a lifestyle. A lifestyle that is said to have an abundance of benefits, such as more contentment, less stress and more freedom. Minimalism is about creating space to live simply and meaningfully; it’s about living intentionally. Living with as little as possible keeping only items that are near and dear.

Minimalist Design

Interior design features can include large windows, open spaces (light and airy), fantastic if there are stellar
views. Bring in the warmth of natural to juxtapose the clean lines and simplicity of the interior. Incorporate
textiles to warm the space (adds warmth and comfort). The design style is all about marrying form and
function, which can be easily done with a rich texture in a functional home item. Traditionally, the minimalism
design principles feature a neutral color palette, and you can offer texture by using a variety of materials, such
as timber, glass, pottery, cloth, and canvas. Add texture with a tiled back splash breaks up the texture of walls.
Geometric, subway work well and gives a surprise without being garish. Let a work of art to dominate the
space. Color and life of a masculine spaces with feminine art. Simple modern furniture to compliment. But you
do need to retain the principles of form and function and a clear line connecting your interior design.

4 Elements of Minimalist Interior Design:

 • Belongings need to be pared down and concealed
 • Bare essentials, minimalist furniture and design (focus on functionality and practicality)
 • Clean, clear surfaces, bare walls w/ minimal artwork
 • Monochromatic color scheme (light and soft natural shades)

Minimalist Kitchen

The minimalist kitchen does mean removing some of your clutter so you can easily find what you use the most.
And it means arranging your food and tools in the most convenient locations possible. We all know this. But we
don’t always know where to begin.

Hide away appliances. Ditch the kitchen table. Instead of going with a traditional kitchen table, put barstools or wire chairs at a kitchen island or breakfast bar to open up your space. Doing so will add visual appeal to your kitchen, create cleaner lines in your design, and give you more room to move around!

What does this mean for you?

 • Cull cooking equipment, cut your dishware, utensils, small appliances, and knives down.
 • Declutter food storage collection (re-usable containers. Holding onto used yogurt and sour cream containers to use for food storage is a worthy and thrifty American tradition and there’s no shame in that game. But is there an avalanche that spills out every time you open the cupboard?)
 • The only things that should be on your counter are things you use every day, and anything that is inconvenient to move around (coffee pot, toaster, crock of kitchen tools.)
 • Incorporate a remote pantry for bulk food, small appliances, and other items not used regularly. Use organization techniques to keep food styles together.
 • A popular feature of a minimalism is to get rid of traditional knobs/pulls. Flat paneled doors and mouldings are a key in this uncluttered, streamlined design.
 • Color blocking with natural surfaces is a great way to break up a traditionally monochromatic design.

To achieve your minimalist design goals, interior cabinet storage is key to keeping your counters clutter free.

 • Pegged drawer systems are great to organize glassware, plates and bowls; cutlery, spice and divided drawers for snacks and utensils.
 • Corner cabinets, or blind cabinets, can pose a challenge when it comes to kitchen storage and organization. Tiered shelving that can be spun inside the cabinet or pulled out of the cabinet entirely.
 • Tray dividers help keep flat goods from stacking up.
 • Specialty service areas contribute to organization: coffee station to keep goods together.
 • Hidden trash storage eliminates the need for free-standing trash and recycling cans.
 • A toe-kick drawer at the bottom of a cabinet or creating an under-cabinet drawer to keep your pet’s food and water bowls in the kitchen without sacrificing any floor space. Plus, it contains spills!

Minimalist Bathroom

Bathrooms need not to be forgotten and are great spaces for the minimalist style of living. Bathrooms have become a spa-like place to get away. They create an environment where one feels refreshed after using the restroom or taking a shower because the room has taken into account both function and style without going too overboard. You can find a million bathroom ideas on Pinterest, but it’s a bit more difficult to find good minimalist bathroom ideas.

Designing a minimalist bathroom can be quite easy. You just need to be thoughtful about the things that you use and make sure that they also have a purpose. Minimalism is ideal especially for small to medium sized bathrooms. Minimalist homeowners now combine clean lines with stylish features in bathrooms. Complimenting different shapes (i.e., slim floating vanities and an eggshell-like soaking tub) to create an intriguing, and serene retreat.

One key element that helps keep minimalist bathrooms feeling clean, fresh, and peaceful are the use of an all-
white color scheme and use of fixtures like white sink basins, a crisp white soaking bathtub that is visually
appealing. Wall mounted fixtures are wonderful in keeping them off the counter or floor making the floor a clean and open space. Minimalist bathrooms tend to feature upgraded focal points such as plumbing fixtures, simple lighting, clean line cabinets or accent walls. Creating a luxurious shower can really elevate the feeling of your bathroom. Shower design is an important part of a minimalist bathroom design.

It is important to pare down your products and the decor. You want to keep the surfaces clear and clutter free with only functional items out. Maximizing cabinet and drawer storage is key to staying organized.

Other concepts to consider are for your minimalist bathroom include:

 • Use of natural elements: Wood-teak and bamboo or other hardwoods are smart options: simple plank shower floor, floating vanity, accent walls.
 • Squared sinks, straight lines, removing shower curtains (use glass enclosures) or go with a wet room were there is no enclosure at all. Shower seating is also great if there is no bathtub.
 • Medicine cabinets are an obvious choice to help clear the clutter off of vanity top and keeps texture at a minimum.
 • Easy to clean surfaces such as stone, tile, glass should be employed to help keep your space clean and tidy.
 • Simple interior design items are a great way to incorporate function with form. Open shelving with baskets and coordinating glass jars for cotton balls or cotton swabs.

Our designers are here to bring your ideas to life and to help you get organized.

Adopting a minimalist mindset doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual process that takes time and effort. This
mindset shift is probably the hardest part, but once you’ve made it, you’ll start noticing the positive changes
around you. While the final expression of a minimalist design might appear effortlessly simple, as spare as a poem
and as clear as a bell, achieving this kind of powerful simplicity is anything but easy. Use these concepts to create
a perfectly beautiful – and interesting – minimalist kitchen or bath. At Crystal Kitchen and Bath we have great
designers to help you bring your minimalist space together.
